Director, Producer & Author Kalliope Barlis

Hi, Kalliope! Thank you for granting this interview and sincere congratulations on your Outstanding Journey as a Filmmaker and Bestselling Author.

1. You wrote, produced, created and directed the short documentary Kalliope’s From Fear to Freedom. What should the audience expect to see?

Hope. Hope to overcome fears and bad memories in less than a half hour.  In Kalliope’s From Fear to Freedom, they’ll see a woman overcome her fear of heights with the ability stand on a ledge with arms wide open overlooking a vast valley.

2. Tell us a bit about your background. When did you decide to become a filmmaker?

Although I graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn a long time ago, it was only recently that I decided to document the results my clients get after I help them help themselves.  Because they overcome their fears in less than a half hour, I thought it would inspire people living in fear to overcome their own.  So I started filming people before, during and after the process and ended up with six episodes.

3. What are the directors and authors that inspire you the most?

So many to mention! Francis Ford Coppola for his work in The Godfather and Michael Curtiz for Casablanca.  Authors Dr. Richard Bandler, The 14th Dalai Lama and Kalliope Barlis.

4. What was the hardest artistic choice you made in the making of Kalliope’s From Fear to Freedom, at any stage in production?

Nothing was hard in regard to artistic choice.  Most everything in the making of Kalliope’s From Fear to Freedom was easy with the exception of one person. But, because everyone else was in sync, choices were easy.

5. If you were to shoot the film again, what would you do differently?

I would definitely shoot more B Roll and hire a separate cinematographer with the energy to have the camera on almost all the time to capture fun moments in between more serious moments.  I love watching footage from movies that didn’t make it in the film like the mistakes, the laughs and the goofy stuff.  To me, I’d almost watch hours of that stuff instead of some movies, some of the time.

6. How long did it take from start-to-finish to make Kalliope’s From Fear to Freedom?

It took one day of filming and a week of editing.  It also took time to make a DCP version with the sound and color required for quality control to set up for streaming and screening.

7. What would be your piece of advice to a new filmmaker? Or a Team setting out to make short documentaries?

Make sure your crew are like minded and get along.  The film crew on set touched my heart while they were completely committed to documenting people overcome their fears while I help the person in fear help themselves.

Also, have a goal in mind of the vibe, the feel, the look and the overall message you want your viewer to gain through your vision.  My message was hope to overcome fear and gain freedom.  The woman who overcomes her fear of heights in Kalliope’s From Fear to Freedom expresses her freedom with arms wide open overlooking a vast valley.  The vision is coupled with the feeling of freedom.

8. Do you think the era of online streaming for movies has had a positive or negative impact on the film making industry?

It’s had a different impact on the film making industry.  For sure, it has given many more creative film making people more work because of the need for content.  So that’s great.  It’s the golden time to be in the film industry for this reason.

When Kalliope’s From Fear to Freedom starts streaming, it will be positive 100% since more people will see the work and be inspired to train with me so they can help people too.

9. What’s next for you as a Best-Selling Author and as a Filmmaker? What are you working on at the moment?

Trainings.  I love giving people the tools to help themselves, so they become their own best friend and gain the success they want for their future by making better decisions.  Currently, I’m working on some online programs but more so on setting up the schedule for the year to train people in person and get Licensed as a Practitioner.
